Objectives
Restrict timer usage to specific Matters or Litigation Cases
Prevent unassigned time entries
Improve accuracy and accountability in time tracking
Ensure timers are automatically linked to the correct record
Steps
The Enforced Matter-Bound Timer feature ensures that all timer-based time entries are directly linked to a specific Matter or Litigation Case. This helps prevent unassigned or incorrectly logged time entries and improves time tracking accuracy.
When this feature is enabled, users will no longer be able to start the timer globally from the system header. Instead, timers can only be started from within a selected record, such as a Matter or Litigation Case.
How It Works
Without This Feature
By default, users can start the timer at any time using the global timer (chrono) available in the system header, even when they are not working inside a specific record.
With Enforced Matter-Bound Timer
When this permission is disabled:
- Users can no longer start a timer from from the global chrono.
Users can only start timers from within a Matter or Litigation Case
The timer will automatically be associated with the selected record
This ensures all logged time is properly connected to the relevant work item.
Steps to Configure the Restriction
Navigate to System Settings.
Open User Group Permissions under Users & Permissions Section
Choose the user group you want to configure.
Set the Module type to Practice.
Locate the Time Tracking Permissions section.
Find the permission: Start Timer
Disable this permission for the selected user group.
How Users Start the Timer
After disabling the permission, users now need to:
Open a Matter or Litigation Case.
Navigate to the Time Entries tab.
Click Actions → Start Timer.
Timers can now only be started from within the selected record.
Automatic Timer Switching
If a user starts another timer from a different Matter or Litigation Case:
The previous timer will be automatically paused
The new timer will start immediately and be linked to the newly selected record
This ensures users only have one active timer at a time while maintaining accurate record association.
