Objectives:

  • Add new practice areas

  • Manage existing practice areas

  • Set or update practice area prefixes

Steps:

Practice Areas are essential for classifying matters and cases in the system. When creating a new matter or case, selecting a practice area is mandatory, as it determines the area of law it belongs to.

  • These settings can be managed under:

System Settings → Matters → Practice Area & Due Dates

Adding a New Practice Area

  • Click the “Add Practice Area” link at the top of the settings page.

  • Enter a Name for the practice area.

  • Specify where it applies:

    • Matters only

    • Cases only

    • Both
      (Check the appropriate boxes)

  • Optionally, configure due dates for this practice area:

    • Default Due in (Days): Set a general target completion timeframe (e.g., 30 days).

    • Custom Due Dates: Add specific rules based on:

      • Matter priority

      • Client

      • Custom due period (number of days)

  • Set a Prefix: This is an abbreviation for the practice area used in Matter IDs.

If the Practice Area Prefix section is enabled in ID Configuration, this field must be filled
  • Click Save to add the new practice area.

Managing Existing Practice Areas

  • The Practice Area & Due Dates page displays a list of all defined practice areas.

  • You can Edit or Delete any practice area from this list.

Practice areas already used in existing matters cannot be deleted
  • To update:

    • Due In (Days): Click edit and modify the default due timeframe.

    • Prefix: Update the prefix abbreviation used in Matter IDs.
